VCA Animal Hospitals shares tips and information for pet owners on care concerns for cats, dogs, and others during the summer months. These can include risks from heat, plants, and traveling.
Cats and dogs lower their body temperature through panting but still need to be aided during warm weather. In order to reduce the risk of hyperthermia or heatstroke, during exercise, pets should be able to take breaks and receive water, and pets should not be left outside without shade, or left in a car even with the windows down.
Ticks are an additional warm weather issue as the creatures can carry and transmit diseases to pets if bitten. Rates of tick-borne illness reached a level of 1 in 20 in pets testing positive for disease in 2021, according to VCA. Animals who spend time outdoors should be checked for ticks thoroughly and any ticks removed.
Summer traveling with pets should include brining all essential items like water and food bowls, treats, medication, and copies of medical records. It’s also important to have a plan in case your pet has a health issue while traveling, including what veterinary care facilities are accessible at the destination.
Management of allergies, including skin symptoms that lead to scratching and licking, and sometimes subsequent infections, is important for pet health.
