Banfield to launch internship program

Veterinary care company, Banfield Pet Hospital, will begin its first internship program, NextVet. The program will welcome 15 high school students at its veterinary hospital locations: Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Portland-Vancouver, and Washington DC. The effort is part of a plan to increase the reach of the company’s Educational Pathways program.

“Banfield believes firmly that there's an intersection between strengthening the veterinary talent pipeline and diversifying the profession,” said Melissa Marshall, vice president of people and organization at Banfield.

“By continuing to remove barriers to equitable education through the expansion of Banfield's Educational Pathways program, we're creating more accessible pathways for current and aspiring veterinary professionals. Our goal is to help create a more sustainable industry so we can best serve people, pets, and communities.”

Through the program, students will learn directly from practitioners about companion animal medicine. In addition, Banfield will collaborate with the Boys & Girls Club of America to connect with underrepresented students in kindergarten through 12th grade to introduce them to working toward potential careers in veterinary medicine.

Another endeavor of the Educational Pathways program puts funding toward building a pipeline of associates. The effort includes expanding an existing partnership with InStride that connects paraprofessionals with tuition assistance from Banfield to undertake an online undergraduate degree in business, IT, or marketing as an addition to veterinary medicine or STEM studies.
