Veterinary hospital network, Banfield Pet Hospital, has released findings from a new survey that points to shifts toward pet owners choosing to stay home with pets over socializing. According to the survey of 1000 owners who adopted a cat or dog in the last 2 years, 76% of respondents indicated they preferred being with their pet instead of their friends, family, or partner.
Surveys, which were analyzed against pet health records from veterinary clinics, also found that 95% of owners said they prioritized their pet’s health in 2021, up from 20% in 2020. The uptick has been borne out in veterinary practices and through telehealth visits or chats, which have all increased.
"As the nation's leading provider of preventive veterinary care, we are encouraged that pets and their people are closer than ever, and that owners are increasingly finding ways to spend quality time with and ensure their pets get the care they need – whether that's through office visits or new modes of care like telehealth," said Molly McAllister, chief medical officer of Banfield Pet Hospital. "As the pet-owner bond continues to grow, veterinary professionals have a unique opportunity to play an even more important role in the lives of people, with the ultimate goal of helping the growing number of pets stay happy and healthy."
Survey findings also included: many chose their pet over-focusing on dating (47% of women, 49% of men). The majority (94%) indicated that owning a pet has changed their social life, with 1 in 5 sharing that being outside with their pet has led to meeting their significant other. On the other end of the spectrum, 10% of respondents canceled a date rather than leaving their pet alone at home.
From a health perspective, 67% reported they went on more walks, runs, or hikes because of a pet, 41% started running with their pet, and 62% shared they were more active because of a pet.
Time at home with pets has also meant that owners noticed more health concerns, including 26% of dogs’ diagnoses of pruritis. AN uptick in telehealth visits has occurred as well: 40% of respondents had a telehealth appointment, 44% would use telehealth, and 88% suggested they would use telehealth in the future without COVID-19 limitation.
