The oldest national humane society, American Humane, named the winners of its annual Hero Veterinarian and Hero Veterinary Nurse awards. The program is sponsored by Zoetis Petcare. The winners were decided by online voting after the nominees were narrowed to five finalists from thousands of entrants.
"Veterinarians and veterinary nurses are heroes to the animals they serve, and these awards are an effort to recognize the best of the best," said Dr. Robin Ganzert, American Humane president and CEO. "Dr. Lawler and Ms. Elston are remarkable animal welfare advocates, and we are proud to honor their work in aiding the animals living in their communities. We also want to give special thanks to our friends at Zoetis Petcare for sponsoring this national campaign to recognize the achievements of the veterinary community."
American Humane Hero Veterinarian recipient, Dr. Mary Kate Lawler, serves as executive director and chief surgeon of the Spay-Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) in San Antonio, Texas, where she has performed about 8,500 spay/neuter surgeries each year, and continues to manage the business aspects of the organization. Under her guidance, across the entire SNAP staff, about 20,000 spay/neuter procedures and about 8,500 wellness care visits are completed each year. In addition, Lawler has taken part in spay and neuter clinics nationally and internationally.
American Humane Hero Veterinary Nurse award winner, Jill Elston, has spent her career in shelter medicine and continues to work at Animal Care Sanctuary. She manages a veterinary care team providing services in an underserved region, and also takes home pets who need additional care. She rehabilitates fearful and ill animals as well as acting as hospice for older dogs who would not be adopted.
