A basic understanding of general surgical principles should be understood prior to performing avian surgery. This chapter provides clinicians information on a large variety of soft tissue surgical procedures that may be encountered in poultry and waterfowl.
Tracheal surgery in poultry and waterfowl is sometimes required to resolve traumatic injuries, avulsions, intraluminal foreign bodies, parasites, or other mass obstructions and strictures.
A celiotomy is used to access the coelom in birds. The gastrointestinal tract, from oral cavity to vent, may require surgical corrective procedures in pet poultry and waterfowl. Liver surgery is generally limited to partial hepatectomy to remove solitary masses and liver biopsy. Liver biopsy is a fairly common procedure and is very useful in determining hepatic pathology.
Reproductive tract disease is very common in poultry and waterfowl, especially in female birds. These domesticated birds have been selectively bred, in many cases, over centuries and have a high reproductive drive.
