The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the Carter-Fitzpatrick Amendment to the INVEST in America Act, which would ban the slaughter of American horses. If the law is passed, the bipartisan amendment would ban the transport of horses for the purpose of being slaughtered, putting an end to the killing of American horses for consumption.
American horses have not been slaughtered for human consumption in the U.S. since 2007. However, a loophole in the law allows horses to be trucked across and out of the nation, for slaughter and consumption elsewhere. Last year, approximately 35,000 horses were exported for slaughter, primarily to Mexico and Canada.
These slayings also affect the broader equine community, including horse owners, riders, and rescues. They fear that their horses will end up in the slaughter pipeline despite doing their best to protect them. Kill buyers – people who buy horses to ship to slaughter in Mexico and Canada – attend auctions and frequently outbid horse rescue groups.
If the Carter-Fitzpatrick Amendment must be included in the final version of the bill that is approved by both chambers in order to take effect.
