Dr. Mike Walker, an Austin, Texas veterinarian, has joined NeoBites, a startup focused on sustainable pet food, as an advisor. As part of his role, Dr. Walker, will aid in the company’s movement toward advancement in dog food made from insect protein.

“Dr. Walker's clinical guidance will enable us to engage with the veterinary community in ways that can positively impact dog health and our planet's health,” said Wesley Cooper, chief executive officer and co-founder of NeoBites. “We are proud to work together with him to evolve the pet food industry.”

In 2021, Neo Bites became the first of its kind line of insect protein toppers for dog food. Insect protein can provide superior nutrition with greater amounts of omega-3 and micronutrients than other meat. Insect protein also contributes significantly lower amounts of greenhouse gases than meat protein.

“Neo Bites really stands out as a breath of fresh air in an industry known to repeat itself and lack innovation over the years,” said Walker. “We are still early in the alternative protein market and there is a great window of opportunity to become an industry standard and leader that can position us for excellent growth and brand recognition moving forward.”

"Our industry is ripe for change and as my generation is starting to make up a larger majority of the industry workforce and practice owner population, we are asking 'Why?' a lot," says Walker. "Innovative, risk-taking individuals are what drive industries forward and veterinarians are an extremely smart and empathetic group that I see embracing an option like Neo Bites with open arms."
