The North American Veterinary Community (NAVC) announced on March 3 that Dr. Christine Navarre, DVM, and diplomate ACVIM-LA, was recently named Louisiana’s 2023 Veterinarian of the Year.
Navarre serves as extension veterinarian for the Louisiana State University AgCenter, Louisiana Beef Quality Assurance Coordinator and treasurer of the NAVC Board of Directors.
LSU’s College of Agriculture also shared this news in late February, following the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association’s annual meeting. Navarre has served as an NAVC Board member since 2009.
According to the LSU story, Navarre spends many hours with producers raising cattle and horses, which are the largest animal industries in Louisiana. But she also works with an array of other animals — sheep, goats, rabbits and even crawfish.
NAVC CEO Gene O’Neill said in the news release that the organization celebrates Dr. Navarre for this well-deserved and extraordinary recognition.
“Dr. Navarre’s expertise as a livestock health specialist and her passion for the veterinary profession enables us to elevate and expand our support and work for veterinary professionals worldwide in every area of veterinary medicine,” he said.
Navarre received her DVM from Louisiana State University. Following graduation, she worked in a private mixed animal practice in Sulphur Springs, Texas before attending Texas A&M for a large animal internal medicine residency and master’s degree program.
She subsequently joined the food animal section at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital, where she spent 11 years providing clinical service and teaching food animal medicine and surgery.
Navarre is also past president of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners and a past president and current treasurer of the NAVC. She and her family raise SimAngus cattle and her extended family is involved with the beef and farming industries.
