Finnish animal health company, GekkoVet International, was named as a finalist in the Animal Health, Nutrition & Technology Innovation meeting in June. The company’s veterinary device can streamline disganosis and treatment.
The company’s digital diagnostic and treatment device can incorporate information from 50,000 pages of clinical material to aid veterinarians in making a diagnosis. The tool uses 28,000 symptom and diagnosis combinations and with the firm’s algorithim narrows the diagnoses, ranking them by probablity.
“GekkoVet isn't here to replace the experience and knowledge of veterinarians,” said Dr. Johanna Majamaa, co-founder of GekkoVet. “We are here to be their right hand. Nobody can recall thousands of pages of source material, instead of Googling it we're here to help clinician's Gekko it to improve efficiency.”
The tool is aimed to improve speed and accuracy of diagnosis for veterinarians. And to help alleviate workload stress as there is predicted to be a shortage of veterinarians by 2029, according to the company which cites AVMA for the statistic.
"In the face of severe staff shortages that aren't going anywhere soon our industry has no choice but to evolve to survive,” said Dr. Mike Petty, owner and veterinarian at Arbor Pointe Veterinary Hospital. “For too long we've relied on Google and stacks of books for our reference needs. Everything else is accessible from a few taps on a cell phone—except clinical (decision making) tools."
