Pet Poison Helpline has shared a new online tool that reveals the number of calls received geographically and by poisonous plant. The database, Toxin Trends, is powered by five years of data from calls fielded from 2017 to 2022. The intended purpose of the tool is to let pet owners and veterinarians know about common calls in their region and, by extension, common toxic plants in their area.
Dr. Renee Schmid, senior veterinary toxicologist at Pet Poison Helpline, said Toxin Trends identifies the top 30 potentially dangerous plants to pets and identifies where in the country pets are most at risk for that exposure.
Trends for oleander poisoning can be seen to be more common in certain regions, including in Arizona.
Schmid said that coastal areas have different types of pet poisonings than in the Midwest or desert regions, but knowing which specific dangerous plants are in your region can better prepare you to protect your pet.
Users can filter data to the level of cities and common symptoms of poisoning per plant.
Pet Poison Helpline is an independent, nationally recognized animal poison control center based in Minneapolis. The service is accessible by calling 800-213-6680 and for a $75 charge per case.
