On Jan. 11, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) shared that a provision it had back that was enacted into law on Dec. 29, 2022, requires the development of a national One Health Framework.
The One Health language passed is taken from previous legislation, the Advancing Emergency Preparedness Through One Health Act (HR 2061/S 681). It directs the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to work with other federal departments and agencies to develop a national One Health plan to collaborate on preventing, detecting, controlling and responding to zoonotic diseases.
AVMA President Lori Teller said that the measure will help strengthen the nation’s preparedness for diseases that can spread between animals and humans.
“We have all witnessed the significant threat that zoonotic diseases pose to our society,” she said in the story. “With animals, humans, and the environment being more interconnected than ever, the AVMA applauds Congress for taking this crucial step forward in fully implementing a One Health Framework so we can better protect public health.”
