5 equine innovations

Spoga horse is the largest international business-to-business trade fair for the equine industry. In February, 6,200 visitors from 65 countries congregated in Cologne, Germany, to participate in the event, exploring innovative exhibits, attending experts’ lectures, and networking with fellow equestrians. Spoga’s professional jury selected the top 30 worldwide innovations, ranging from robots that can maintain a good training surface, to functional fashion for riders, that they believe will help improve the equine industry. The following innovative products are designed to improve the horse’s well-being.

  1. Hoofbeat

Hoofbeat is a gait mapping system that distinguishes between landing, stance, swing, and break-over in time and movement. The technology     uses high-precision sensors to convert the horse’s movements into objectively interpretable, collectable data that is shown in a series of     images and in 3D animation that can be played back at different speeds. Veterinarians, farriers, and owners can use this information to help     keep the hoof balanced, reducing the stress and strain on bones, tendons, and ligaments. Applications include:

  • Hoof maintenance — Farriers can receive direct feedback about their trimming and shoeing techniques.
  • Intervention — Hoofbeat helps recognize gait abnormalities, so owners can seek veterinary care to address the problem as soon as possible. The technology also helps veterinarians visualize subtle asymmetries and compensatory movements.
  • Performance — Hoofbeat accurately measures gait speed and timing to help monitor the horse’s performance.
  • Rehabilitation — Orthopedic progress can accurately be monitored during recovery.

    2. Novafon power 2

Deep sound wave vibrations stimulate muscle and tissues to relax the horse and alleviate pain. Novafon’s power 2 provides an intensity     spectrum that includes three frequency levels to offer horses effective treatment. Treatment options include:

  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) — TMJ pain can result in imbalances in the horse’s neck and back. Masticatory muscle and stress points can be treated to help treat these issues.
  • Neck band — Show jumpers and dressage horses can suffer inflammation in their bursa subligamentosa nuchalis cranialis and caudalis bursas, which restricts the cervical spine. Sound wave therapy in this area and along the neck and throat muscles can help relieve pain and tension and improve function and flexibility.
  • Shoulder — Myofascial pain in the shoulder region can be alleviated by treating the shoulder muscles and stress points over the scapula and humerus.
  • Back — Novafon can be used to address back pain to help relax and strengthen sore muscles.
  • Sacroiliac joint — Treatment of stress points around the sacroiliac joint can help reduce tightness and pain.
  • Tendons — In some cases, treating the muscular structure above an injured tendon can help stimulate healing.

    3. Fascia tool #DasSpix

Myofascial therapy, which is commonly used in human athletes to reduce pain and improve musculoskeletal function, is gaining popularity in     equine healthcare. Angelina Spix designed a fascia tool to treat equine patients. Benefits include:

  • Improved mobility — Fascia shortens and hardens in response to psychological stress, protective postures, lack of exercise, and incorrect body use, limiting muscle and joint range of motion. Subtle manual pressure, applied correctly, can loosen and mobilize the fasciae.
  • Improved proprioception — Fascia is richly innervated and plays an important role in proprioception and coordination. When the fascia glides properly, sensory awareness and coordination are improved.
  • Reduced pain — When fascia shortens, tight, painful trigger points can develop. Myofascial therapy helps resolve these areas, reducing pain.

    4. R&Air Care

R&Air Care’s technology creates an optimal indoor climate by binding dust, cooling the air, minimizing odors, and regulating humidity, as well     as naturally reducing insects in the stable. The system sprays tiny water molecules in the environment, forming an extra fine mist that binds     unwanted particles in the air to reduce respiratory tract irritants and maintain the temperature and humidity at a pleasant level. Features     include:

  • Operation modes — Different operating modes, such as cooling, dust control, humidity regulation, and feeding, can be selected from a central control panel.
  • Dosing station — A dosing station is available to add beneficial additives to the spray mist.
  • High-performance nozzles — Stainless steel nozzles that are mounted above the stalls and stable aisles use a low noise pump technology and damped pipe power mounts to minimize noise.

R&Air Care is manufactured by Rower & Rub, the company known for producing high-quality living spaces for horses. Rower & Rub’s R&Air     Protect system is also innovative technology to help extinguish fires and remove dangerous smoke gasses from the environment.

    5. Forget Flies In-Feed Solution

This product uses innovative, patented technology and natural ingredients to repel flies. The product combines unique polysulphides, naturally     produced from garlic, MSM, and methionine, removing the variations found in straight garlic, to ensure optimum, consistent results with every     feeding. The active ingredients are absorbed through the gut wall and travel to the skin, where the compounds stimulate an adverse reaction in     the sensory receptors of flies, ecto-parasites, and other biting insects, causing a significant repellent effect. The product is palatable, easily     mixes in the horse’s daily feed, and contains other key ingredients, such as organic zinc, cider vinegar, and seaweed, to support skin and coat     health.

Equine industry innovators facilitate everyday life and help horses and the people who care for them thrive.
