VMX 2023: Neogen talks affordable, effective Provecta flea, tick treatment
Company unveils Provecta Cares Initiative to support pet parents, veterinary teams
At the recent VMX convention in Orlando, Veterinary33 spoke with team members from Neogen, which provides a variety of products for all veterinary practices, from small animals to large. The company’s solutions support veterinarians and their clients for wound care, prescriptions and genetic testing.
Neogen also helps to prevent the spread of pathogens and diseases among patients and teams with cleaners, disinfectants and sanitation solutions specifically formulated for use in animal environments.
At VMX, Leslie Cash, vice president of commercial pet healthcare at Neogen, highlighted Provecta Advanced, which repels and kills ticks, fleas and mosquitos and effectively breaks the flea lifecycle. The product is easy to apply, waterproof and fragrance-free. It also contains the active ingredients imidacloprid and pyriproxyfen.
It can be used with dogs and cats, and the price point is affordable – according to Neogen promotional materials, the cost is $3.74 per dose for Provecta II for cats, with one dose per month. For Provecta Advanced for Dogs, the cost is $4.49 per dose and is also applied monthly. The products are available through veterinarians.
Cash said that given the current economic situation in the U.S., the company recently conducted a pet owner survey and talked with consumers about inflation.
“Nearly 80% of pet parents in the U.S. are impacted by inflation right now,” she said. “They’ve signaled that this will change some of their behaviors. As a manufacturer, we want to make sure they have solutions that are efficacious and affordable.”
Provecta is less expensive than oral flea and tick treatments, said Cash.
“It’s great for pets that need the added benefit of repellency, and the product also kills eggs and larvae,” she said. “We want to make sure pet parents are caring for their pets and can afford to do that during these times of inflation. In our recent study, as we dove deeper into impacts, we found that nearly 30% of pet owners said they were going to have to make different choices in the products they purchase for their pets in flea and tick treatments.”
Cash and her colleagues also highlighted Provecta Cares, which was unveiled at VMX 2023. This new program helps pet owners by offering more affordable pet treatments. The initiative also supports veterinarians by giving them products that are affordable and don’t have huge inventory requirements.
As part of the new program Neogen will initially contribute $10,000 to the Veterinary Hope Foundation to support veterinarians as they navigate common stressors unique to their profession.
“We’ve started a partnership with the Veterinary Hope Foundation that is particularly important now,” said Cash. “Veterinarians, vet techs and nurses are all under pressure at work. We are committed to supporting the foundation’s efforts to bring resources and care to the vet community and for people that may be struggling. The mental health crisis is amplified in veterinary medicine. We are stepping up for clinicians and staff that need that support.”
