PetSmart Charities, the charitable arm of PetSmart, has pledged to help to address inadequate veterinary care with a $15 million commitment. The 2022 funding will be used to help veterinary organizations and community-based groups aimed at improving access to veterinary care.
Grants and “innovative delivery models” will be used to alleviate short term barriers to veterinary care and to build solutions that will address the issues in access within communities. In particular, pet owners cite cost as the top barrier to providing adequate and preventive veterinary care as well as what are called “veterinary care deserts” where rural areas and communities of color do not have local access to veterinary care.
"We are committed to supporting people and pets and are working to break down the barriers that prohibit pet families from living happy and healthy lives together," said Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities. "We have a unique opportunity to drive immediate and real change for pets through our grant programs. By working with partners and leaders in the veterinary space, we hope to help build low-cost veterinary care models that can be replicated across the country to meet the tremendous need for affordable care."
An example of one of the grant recipient’s is an organization, Emancipet, a nonprofit which increases access to affordable veterinary care. PetSmart Charities has been involved with Emancipet since 2017, has aided in scaling its organization, and allowed for additional locations of its clinics.
“Thanks to the continued generosity of PetSmart Charities in funding the opening of two of our newest clinics in Houston and Philadelphia, Emancipet is one step closer to achieving our vision of ensuring that everyone in the United States will have access to veterinary care they can afford,” said Amy Mills, chief executive officer of Emancipet.
