Petland, other companion animal leaders host breeder symposium

Petland Inc., partnered with the American Kennel Club, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Ohio Forum for Companion Animals and the Ohio Department of Agriculture to host the eighth annual Dog Breeder Symposium in September. The event was attended by more than 275 people representing professional and hobby breeders from Ohio, Indiana and Iowa, according to a release.

"Petland is proud to support this vital annual event focusing on breeder best practices,” said Joe Watson, president and chief executive officer of Petland. “The collaboration between federal and state agencies, breeders, veterinarians and the pet industry demonstrates the priority all of us have in continuing to develop and implement processes to improve the life and welfare of pets."

The meeting is geared towards sharing best practices and the continued improvement of dog breeding standards. This year, the symposium included a focus on Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Canine Care Certified Program, a certification with the nation's highest standards of care in regulated and unregulated kennels. In addition, key topics covered included exercise, obedience training and providing an environment of positive enrichment and socialization.

"Each group brings a unique set of skills and expertise to the meeting and it's an extraordinary educational networking opportunity that supports and encourages responsible breeding," said Petland's Vice President of Animal Welfare Brian Winslow.

Petland, Inc. is a franchise operation with quality, full-service retail pet centers across the U.S., Canada, China, Mexico, South Africa, Brazil, El Salvador and Saudi Arabia.
