From 2014 to date, health authorities in mainland China have reported 30 cases of avian influenza A in humans, usually with symptoms of eye infection (conjunctivitis), flu-like symptoms (e.g. fever, cough , sore throat, muscle aches) or serious respiratory illnesses (for example, chest infection). The incubation period varies from 7 to 10 days. The most virulent forms can cause respiratory failure, multiple organ failure and even death, as in this case reported from China.
People in close contact with poultry are the most susceptible to infection, and the elderly, children and people with chronic diseases are at higher risk of developing complications such as bronchitis or respiratory infections.
