The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) has announced the report of an outbreak of African swine fever in northern Hong Kong. Health authorities had detected an abnormal number of dead wild boars in the Wong Yue area. In one of the corpses collected for analysis, the tests were positive for ASF.
Health authorities said there had been no abnormal deaths in other areas, but the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Conservation will monitor any deaths requiring attention. They also stated that no pig farms had been affected by this outbreak.
Hong Kong had been ASF-free in recent years until an outbreak in February 2021 affected a pig farm with 3,200 pigs, of which more than 800 had to be euthanized. Previously, in May 2019, two pigs that had been imported from China also tested positive for ASF.
