In this episode, Dr. Kelly Diehl from the Morris Animal Foundation chats with Dr. Gabriele Landolt of Colorado State University about the flu in animals. The pair discuss how influenza viruses perpetuate in the environment and how some, but not all, animals are affected by influenza.
Landolt talks about how to keep animals such as dogs and horses safe when influenza strikes. The pair also touch on how these viruses can mutate to infect new species, including people.
Landolt is an assistant professor of equine medicine at CSU. Her research focuses on infectious respiratory pathogens and pulmonary damage resulting from infectious disease. Her laboratory has ongoing projects in development of a tissue culture system that models pulmonary vasculature and is evaluating host adaptation to new strains of influenza and cross-species transmission events. Her laboratory also provides surveillance for influenza in wild animals that might serve as reservoirs or vectors for influenza exposure to humans and other species.
