An international survey seeks to better understand equine Cushing's syndrome
It is part of a University of Melbourne project to investigate its causes and improve early diagnosis, treatment and nutritional management.
A survey that is part of an international project to improve understanding of the causes of Equine Cushing Syndrome (ECS) or Pituitary Pars Intermediate Dysfunction (PPIS) invites horse and pony owners over 15 years of age to share their views on this disease.
SCE commonly affects older horses and ponies and is associated with laminitis, weight loss, delayed hair loss, and long curly hair.
The findings will help researchers better understand how owners make treatment decisions and which decisions have the best results. The scientists hope the findings will also provide insight into how owners comply with drug administration and their ability to feed horses SCE separately.
The survey is being conducted by the University of Melbourne, with support from the Waltham ™ Equine Studies Group and Spillers, in collaboration with Queensland University of Technology, Royal Veterinary College, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, and Liphook Equine Hospital.
Spillers Research and Development Director Clare Barfoot notes: “The survey will provide valuable information to help improve the medical care and management of horses with SCE. It will also give us a clearer idea of the current levels of knowledge among horse owners and how best to provide practical and disease-specific information. "
