Dr. Karen Muñana: epilepsy is a common problem in dogs, cats

Veterinary33 interviewed Dr. Karen Muñana about "A practical guide to seizure disorders in dogs and cats" at the 2022 American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine's forum. Muñana and Dr. Luisa De Risio are co-editors of the book, which provides practical information for clinicians and veterinary team members on every aspect of seizure management. The guide also includes a review of current scientific research.

Muñana said given how common seizure disorders are in companion animals, it’s important to have the latest information on the disease to treat those cases most effectively.

"That was really our inspiration, to develop a practical guide that veterinarians could use to help them in their management of animals that suffer from epilepsy," she said, when asked why she wanted to write this book.

Muñana is a professor of neurology and neurosurgery at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

De Risio is the clinical research and excellence director at Linnaeus, a veterinary group in the UK and Ireland offering specialist referral services and primary care. She is also one of the founding members of the International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force, the chair of the task force's diagnosis working group and co-chair of its treatment working group.
