Pet food and animal product company, Mars Petcare US, has shared its report, Keeping People and Pets Together, which looks at data on pet owners, increased time spent with pets during the pandemic, and ongoing changes to work life and daily activities. The report is the company’s third annual, and evaluated parameters like wellbeing, hurdles for pet owners, and inclusion of pets in work-life.
"Keeping pets and pet parents at the center of everything we do allows us to focus on our purpose: A Better World for Pets," said Ikdeep Singh, regional president of Mars Petcare North America. "The insights from the 'Keeping People and Pets Together' Report will help us continue to drive data-driven innovation in pet care and nutrition – and help fuel our ambition to create a world where all pets are wanted, cared for and welcome."
According to the report, during the pandemic, more pet owners spent an increased amount of time with pets, felt more bonded, and want to continue to spend a great deal of time with pets (80%, 84%, 90%, respectively). For those who were able to work from home during the pandemic, 72% want to take pets to work, and 79% are concerned about pets when they have or will go back to an office.
Barriers in pet ownership include anticipated costs (56%), lack of awareness of possibilities to foster animals (43% for cats, and 48% for dogs). Some potential or current owners expressed concern about adopting a pet from a shelter (33%).
The company has also launched a pet homelessness index to monitor rates and trends.
