Meet Dr. Stephanie Maciorowski

What drew you to this position at Cummings School?

As a student, I saw the compassion and hard work of the Tufts [Cummings School] team, and that is what drew me back for residency. The team is so caring, and we all work as a team to care for our patients. Tufts [Cummings School] is also an advocate for the spectrum of care, which I think is crucial for helping every patient when possible.

What have you been surprised to learn during your tenure here (about veterinary medicine, Cummings School, or yourself)?

I was surprised by the camaraderie that I felt with my other house officers. Whether it was an intern or a resident from another department, we are all ready to help and support one another.

What are you hoping to do after you complete your time at Cummings School?

After residency, I hope to continue teaching others about emergency and critical care medicine and continue to be an advocate for the spectrum of care.

Can you share an experience from your time here at Cummings School that stands out to you – a patient, case, owner, faculty, etc.?

During my first year of residency, we treated a dog named Babette for upper airway disease without an obvious treatment plan. It would have been easy to give up, but we did not walk away. We did our best to address her airway surgically, but we were unsure if she would be able to leave the hospital. She was able to go home and live a happy life! ECC is about trying, and that is what we always do here. If we had been too afraid to try, she might not have been able to go home.

What brings you joy professionally?

The bond we build as doctors, not only with our patients but also with the owners, is one of the major motivators for me professionally. Even when we are only speaking over the phone, we become a team to help their loved ones. When together, we share the joy of their pets improving, it makes all the long hours worth it.

Anything else you would like to share?

Residency is always a challenge, but the people here at Tufts [Cummings School] have made it worth it. No matter what, I always know I have support from my fellow residents, faculty, and nurses.
