The professional not-for-profit organization, Washington State Veterinary Medical Association, or WSVMA, held a virtual meeting in early October. During the meeting, the Pacific Northwest Veterinary Conference, veterinarians and personnel were honored with awards.
Recipients included 2021 Veterinarian of the Year, Sonnya Wilkins, DVM, who is owner of Grays Harbor Veterinary Services, co-owner of Twin Harbors Wildlife Center. Wilkins’ contributions include efforts to educate the community on pet care, to care for local police dogs, to raise funds for an emotional support dog at the children's court advocacy center and launch of the "Vet for a Day" program for local students.
The founder and CEO of an international veterinary aid program, World Vets, was named the year’s Humane Animal Welfare Award recipient. Cathy King, DVM, MS, PhD, has made veterinary services available to underserved regions worldwide, and locally with efforts in disaster and emergency response, education, training, and capacity planning.
Recipient of the 2021 Distinguished Achievement award was Sarah Mantovani, DVM, MS, who is a veterinarian at Seattle Animal Shelter. She was recognized for her work with veterinary forensics regarding cases of neglect and abuse.
The Faculty Member of the Year Award was jointly awarded to Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine associate professors and clinical instructors, Janean Fidel, DVM, DACVIM, DACVR and Rance Sellon, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVIM. The two were awarded for their work in oncology at the teaching hospital and their continued care during the pandemic.
Retired licensed veterinary technician, Teresa Casson, LVT, was awarded the 2021 Distinguished Veterinary Staff Award as acknowledgement of her 24-year career, skill, and commitment to pet patients and owners.
Jessica Reed, DVM, chief of veterinary medicine at Seattle Humane was provided the 2021 Outstanding Veterinary Service Award as recognition for managing the shelter through the pandemic and assisting pet owners with low incomes to attain veterinary care.
