Chancellor King Announces the Inaugural Horizon Award for Faculty Research and Scholarship Honorees


State University of New York Chancellor John B. King Jr. today announced the inaugural faculty member awardees of the Chancellor's Horizon Award for Faculty Research and Scholarship. The honor awards early-career faculty research and scholarly achievements across SUNY's colleges and universities.

"SUNY is known for its exceptional research and scholarship, and the faculty members who earned this recognition are at the forefront of their fields," SUNY Chancellor King said. "Our inaugural Horizon awardees have already made a profound impact in their fields of study early in their careers, and by highlighting them we hope to inspire even more achievements in the years to come."

SUNY Board Trustee Keith Landa and Trustee Candice Vacin said, "SUNY provides an excellent education, and our esteemed faculty are at the forefront of innovation, research, and scholarship. Our congratulations to the inaugural awardees of this prestigious honor; we are grateful for the research and scholarship you do for the public good and for the inspiration you provide for today's students and the next generation of faculty."

The Chancellor's Horizon Award for Faculty Research and Scholarship honors early career tenured and tenure track faculty whose scholarly or creative activities have already achieved significant recognition and, crucially, hold strong promise for field-defining impact in the future. The 10 inaugural awardees are:

  • Dr. Hanna Brant, Associate Professor, Political and International Relations, SUNY Geneseo;
  • Dr. Jennifer Cano, Associate Professor, Physics, Stony Brook University;
  • Dr. Andrew Craig, Associate Professor, Behavioral Analysis, Pediatrics, Neuroscience and Physiology, Upstate Medical University;
  • Dr. Matthew Crayne, Associate Professor, Management, University at Albany;
  • Dr. Kathryn Fiorella, Associate Professor, Public and Ecosystems Health, New York State College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University;
  • Dr. Kathryn Hauschild, Assistant Professor, Psychology, Farmingdale State College;
  • Dr. Sheena Mason, Assistant Professor English, SUNY Oneonta;
  • Dr. Yotam Ophir, Associate Professor, Communication, University at Buffalo;
  • Dr. Yuan Wan, Associate Professor, Biomedical Engineering, Binghamton University; and,
  • Dr. Yaqi You, Assistant Professor, Environmental Resources Engineering, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

Candidates' portfolios were reviewed by Distinguished Academy faculty who made recommendations to the SUNY Provost. Up to 10 awards will be conferred each year.
