As COVID-19 restrictions lift across the United States, many dogs will face an uncomfortable new reality: more time apart from their owner. Lockdown gave humans and dogs many extra hours to strengthen their bond, and as a result, some dogs may have a difficult time transitioning back to the work-week schedule. Here are five ways to help reduce the separation anxiety, according to Erin Askeland, CPDT-KA, CBCC-KA, and animal health and behavior consultant at Camp Bow Wow doggy daycare.

  1. Practice makes perfect: Practice separation with your dog by leaving the house for short periods of time. Start with small absences, such as leaving to get the mail, and increase the period away with time. Enter your home neutrally, and eventually work your way to leaving for the full workday.
  2. Exercise: Take your dog for a walk or play a game of tug of war before you leave the house. A dog that has recently exercised is likely to be less stressed than one who has remained stationary.
  3. Mental stimulation: providing mental stimulation is a great way to distract your pup while you leave. Give them a bone or hide a treat before you head out.
  4. Enroll in class: Training offers lifelong benefits for both you and your dog. It strengthens your communication and bond, and offers new solutions to problems you may experience.
  5. Relax: Some pet owners feel the need to be watching their pet at all times. For peace of mind, it can help to install a home video camera so you can be assured your pup stays out of trouble. Otherwise, you can enroll them in doggy day care, to be certain your dog is not lonely, and is in good hands.
