Veterinarians from all over the world convened in Orlando, Fla., for the 2022 VMX convention January 15-19, while many others attended virtually. More than 940 potential continuing education hours were offered, and many virtual sessions were accessible for 60 days after the conference ended. Learning tracks included small animal, large animal, exotics, nurses and technicians, practice management, and personal development and wellness.

VMX program

VMX offered more than 850 in-person continuing education hours, and sessions were led by world-renowned speakers, providing multiple learning options, formats, and topics for all veterinary team members. Learning opportunities included master class sessions, meet the professor luncheons, hands-on workshops, and behind-the-scenes tours. In addition, attendees could participate in exclusive in-person and virtual entertainment events.

Master class sessions

For an additional fee, master class sessions were offered for numerous topics. These sessions covered:

Case Files of the Walking Wounded: Wildlife Trauma Management — Dr. Terry Norton, director of veterinary services and wildlife health for the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, and Dr. Heather Barron, medical and research director at the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, led this review of wound management in wildlife species, including birds, chelonians, and mammals. Attendees learned triage and trauma management for emergency and critical care cases, and the legalities involved in reporting deliberate harm to wildlife.

Mastering the Canine Lameness Exam — Dr. Ross Palmer, a professor of orthopedics at Colorado State University, led this interactive conversation about blending art and science to evaluate lameness in dogs to confidently localize the origin.

Think You’ve Got It Handled? Become More Cat Friendly — Dr. Kelly St. Denis, a practicing feline medicine specialist, led this interactive session describing cat-friendly techniques. Attendees learned how to implement these techniques to make interactions with their feline patients more productive and efficient.

Meet-the-professor luncheons

These intimate sessions allowed attendees to meet leading clinicians, gain insights, and make connections to enhance their practice.

Dentistry in Your Practice: Thorough and Profitable Is Good — Dr. Mark Smith, co-author of Atlas of Approaches for General Surgery of the Dog and Cat, hosted this interactive presentation, providing tips on offering dental care for dogs and cats. Attendees learned how to establish a dentistry profit center in their practice.

Maintaining Empathy and Compassion Around End of Life — Dr. Mary Gardener, co-founder of Lap of Love and VMX’s Speaker of the Year 2020, gave advice on maintaining empathy and compassion to avoid compassion fatigue.

So Your Client Refused Referral to Ophthalmology — Dr. Kate Myrna, an associate professor in ophthalmology services at the University of Georgia, gave attendees advice on how to approach deep, melting ulcers, uveitis, and ruptured eyes when clients refuse referral.

Hands-on workshops

These hands-on sessions allowed attendees to learn new skills and refine their techniques when performing specialized procedures.

Fear Free Certification and Interactive Hands-on Workshop — This single-day workshop allowed participants to complete the Fear Free Veterinary Professional Certification Program and participate in a live animal handling session to apply key Fear Free concepts, techniques, and handling skills firsthand. Fear Free Certified Professionals were also on hand to advise on how to implement these techniques in practice.

Companion Animal Euthanasia Training Academy Certification Workshop: Advanced Euthanasia Techniques — This full-day workshop included five hours of lecture and a three-hour workshop to provide hands-on euthanasia practice using companion animal cadavers. Participants reviewed acceptable depth of sleep indicators, explored sedation and anesthesia protocols, practiced intraorgan injections, and made paw and ink prints.

Ophthalmic Surgery: Conjunctiva and Cornea Workshop — This workshop focused on the surgical therapy of corneal ulceration and the proper use of conjunctival grafts and flaps. The attendees were able to perform corneal surgeries, including superficial keratectomy, conjunctival flaps, and cornea conjunctival grafts, under the guidance of expert instructors.

Behind-the-scenes tours

Behind-the-scenes tours provided the opportunity for participants to see non-domesticated species in their natural habitat and the inner workings of veterinary care and husbandry at some world-renowned facilities.

Manatee Encounter and Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park Tour — Participants were allowed to swim with manatees all morning, and then visited Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park after lunch. The park is home to many endangered and declining species, including the whooping crane, wood stork, red wolf, and Florida panther, as well as species such as birds of prey, shorebirds, black bears, and alligators.

SeaWorld Orlando — Participants were allowed to observe the veterinary care, husbandry, training, and study of the resident animals at SeaWorld.
