The global market for serum-free media is forecast to grow at 7% CAGR over the next decade, according to a report by market analysts, Transparency Market Research. Serum-free media is created without the use of bovine serum or calf serum; plant-based serum is also gaining ground in the market.
The serum-free media market is expected to grow based on barriers of utilizing serum-based cell media in producing treatments that use recombinant proteins and in creating vaccines. Using plant-based media instead of media from animals reduces the risk of unintentional prions and viruses. At the same time, researchers are indicating a preference for serum-free media due to lower costs, and improved purification. The option also eliminates potential ethical issues around using the fetal bovine serum.
Media that is free of fetal bovine serum is being developed with veterinary researchers to allow for isolation and expansion of mesenchymal stem cells, according to the report. Media that is without protein and is ready to aid in quick cell growth is taking hold with many research and development companies.
