Vetigenics, a biotechnology company focused on animal health, was the recipient of an award for innovation recently. The company was named Startup of the Year 2021 by the Center of Innovation at the University of Pennsylvania. The award was given during the center’s sixth “Celebration of Innovation,” an event held each year during which awards are made to researchers, faculty, and those the institution partners with.
"All of us at Vetigenics are delighted by this honor and can't thank the Penn Innovation community enough for the recognition," said Adriann Sax, chief executive officer and co-founder. "The award not only recognizes the breakthrough work of our co-founders, scientists and partners for safe and effective antibody immunotherapies, but it also affirms our commitment to improve the health and quality of life for companion animals. It inspires us to keep expanding the incredible potential of phage display technology and antibody immunotherapy for veterinary medicine."
Vetigenics was chosen based on the company’s technology that offers a phage display for canines. The platform creates single chain variable fragments, called scFvs, that could potentially be used in therapies to treat infection, immune disease, and cancers. The scFvs are called CANIBODIES and provide genetic material specific to each canine which also would not lead to immune response.
Vetigenics previously was admitted int the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program and is collaborating with Merck’s animal health division.
