Embark Veterinary, Inc., a company focused on genetics in dogs, has marketed its DNA Test for Purebred Dogs, which the company states is the first of its kind. The test can alert owners to potential health issues or breed characteristics. The test costs $199, with rebates possible at the company website.
"Until now, there has not been a dog DNA product on the market specifically designed for purebred dogs, but every dog owner deserves the most accurate and detailed data on their dog's health," said Ryan Boyko, co-founder and chief executive officer of Embark. "Not only will this test better inform owners, veterinarians, and breeders; but it will accelerate our health discovery engine and improve insights into breed-specific health conditions and traits, fueling discoveries that will help extend dogs' lives by three years within the decade."
The test, which was created by geneticists and veterinarians, can aid in identifying genetic predisposition to disease, allowing for food, care, or activity changes. The company’s DNA test also provides a metric on genetic diversity, which can offer a possible window on overall health and likely lifespan.
"We see that highly genetically diverse dogs live on average 2-3 years longer than dogs with low genetic diversity and have fewer health problems over their lifetime," said Adam Boyko, co-founder and chief science officer at Embark. "While owners can't change their dog's genetics, they can be vigilant about their dog's care and exercise knowing their dog's unique health risks."
