The National Association of Pet Food Manufacturers (ANFAAC) recently held a webinar on pet food labeling for veterinary professionals. Founded in May 1980, the association represents industry and works closely with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food on topics including the National Animal Feed Board.
The association represents more than 90% of the companies dedicated in Spain to the manufacturing of pet food.
Current regulations regarding the labelling of pet food are to ensure that labels are factual and verifiable and that they are not misleading or confusing to consumers.
The recent webinar included comments from Dr. Víctor Romano, a veterinarian and coordinator of the association’s technical committee. He also serves as president of the working group on Product Communication of The European Federation of Pet Food Manufacturers.
Romano, who addressed around 200 veterinary professionals, discussed current regulations in the E.U. on the marketing and use of feed which covers everything related to the labeling of animal feed. He outlined the specifics for pet food, since the document regulates all feed, including those intended for livestock.
The regulation recommends that companies create sectoral community codes of good practice for the labelling of feed. These codes should apply the legislation and self-regulatory rules of the sector to unify the labelling criteria of all products sold in the European Union.
Romano also covered detailed information on mandatory product declarations that pet food labeling must include, such as raw materials, nutritional facts or additives.
