Four National Foundations Collaborate to Provide Free Spay/Neuter and Wellness Services and Exceed Goal for Bay Area Pets

On December 6-7 “Champions for Pet Health: Communities Partnering for Wellness and Spay & Neuter” event was held. Preliminary numbers indicate that more than 1,000 dogs and cats across the Bay Area received essential veterinary care, exceeding the goal of 600.

Thanks to the support of four national foundations — La Russa Rescue Champions, Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation, Maddie’s Fund® and BISSELL Pet Foundation — and the collaboration of nine animal well-being organizations, pets across Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco and Santa Clara counties were spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped in just two days.

The participating organizations delivered essential services to over 1,000 pets, including spay/neuter and vaccines and microchips. These are critical tools for preventing disease, reuniting lost pets with their families and reducing shelter overcrowding and the number of homeless animals in local communities. The event made a significant impact on the health and well-being of pets in the Bay Area, thanks to the incredible support of the community, including local media who came together to spread the word.

“Visiting all ten locations over the weekend and seeing the work happening in each one was truly inspiring,” said Tony La Russa, La Russa Rescue Champions. “It was incredible to witness pets receiving essential veterinary care — spay/neuter surgeries, vaccines, and microchips — all in one place. My family and I are so thankful for the whole team - staff, volunteers, and partners whose dedication made this event possible and ensured a real difference for pets, families, and the community that cares for them.”

“This collaboration is what meaningful access to veterinary care looks like - helping pets stay healthy, happy, and together with their families,” said Amy Zeifang, Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation Director and Maddie’s Fund Executive Leadership Team. “This event was also able to address the growing backlog of shelter animals waiting for spay/neuter services and provided essential care for family pets and community cats.”
