Weave Recognizes Critter Fixers with Healthcare Heroes Grant

Weave, a leading all-in-one customer experience and payments software platform for small and medium-sized healthcare businesses, today recognized Dr. Vernard Hodges, DVM, and Dr. Terrence Ferguson, DVM, known affectionately as Critter Fixers, as the recipients of a 2025 Healthcare Heroes grant. Healthcare Heroes honors exceptional healthcare practitioners who go above and beyond for their communities, awarding $5,000 to support and expand their programs.

"Healthcare Heroes celebrates practitioners who make a meaningful impact in their communities," said Chris Baird, Chief Marketing Officer at Weave. "Dr. Hodges and Dr. Ferguson exemplify this spirit through their unwavering commitment to mentoring and inspiring the next generation of veterinarians. Their dedication to empowering young minds and expanding access to veterinary medicine is exactly why we launched this program. We are honored to recognize their remarkable service with this grant."

Drs. Hodges and Ferguson, lifelong friends and owners of Critter Fixer Veterinary Hospitals, are trailblazers in veterinary medicine, breaking barriers and inspiring the next generation of Black veterinarians. As the dynamic duo behind NatGeo Wild’s hit series CRITTER FIXERS: COUNTRY VETS, they treat over 20,000 animals a year across their two bustling locations. Beyond their busy practices, Drs. Hodges and Ferguson are deeply committed to making veterinary care accessible and giving back to their community through mentorship, volunteering, and educational initiatives, ensuring that the future of veterinary medicine is as diverse and compassionate as the care they provide.

Over the years, they have dedicated thousands of hours to volunteering at local high schools, mentoring at-risk students, and teaching veterinary medicine through hands-on experiences in their Vet for a Day program. The program became so successful that it caught the attention of colleges such as Texas A&M, Auburn, Cornell, and Ohio State, who invited the doctors to visit the campus and offer the same program to their students.

“We’ve always said representation matters—and while some may call it a cliché, for us, it’s personal,” said Dr. Terrence Ferguson of Critter Fixers. “When I was a kid dreaming of becoming a veterinarian, I had never seen a Black vet, and that made me question if it was even possible. With only two percent of veterinarians being Black, we know how important it is to show up, speak to students, and let them see what’s possible. We’re trying to be the faces we didn’t see growing up—because if we can help move that number from two percent to ten or fifteen, and make every young person feel seen and supported, then we’ve done something meaningful. We’re all in this together.”
