A recent article published in the One Health Journal points out the importance of institutionalizing the One Health approach in India to improve food and public health standards.
The author explains in the article that India is currently facing numerous health threats such as antimicrobial resistance, environmental health hazards and food safety risks and more importantly zoonotic diseases such as Nipah, influenza avian, scrub typhus, Congo fever, Kyasanur forest disease, COVID-19 and leptospirosis, which are seriously impacting the country's economy.
Existing lagoons
Recent pandemics have exposed the existing gaps in the country's public health policy, to which its government has shown a greater commitment to the One Health approach and has shown its intention to invest more in public health infrastructure.
In addition, as the challenges have increased in recent years, experts have clearly defended the One Health approach, not only to deal with pandemics but also to manage the infodemic through the timely dissemination of accurate information.
A collaborative approach
From the adoption in 2007 of the One Health concept by the Prime Minister of India to the ongoing fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, actions to control and manage the disease have ideally been geared towards a collaborative approach. In 2019, the representatives of the relevant ministries and departments held a pioneering dialogue to establish a national policy on One Health.
Delhi Declaration
In this sense, recently the Ministers of Health of the Member States of the World Health Organization in Southeast Asia signed the Declaration of Delhi, whose key inspiration was to implement intersectoral coordination mechanisms following the One Health approach. Along this line, the future policy of India will emphasize the strengthening of integrated public health laboratories and will contribute to the construction of a national institutional platform for occupational health to promote research initiatives.
The article also highlights key areas in need of One Health intervention in India, the progress this approach has made, and its success stories for sustainable action to tackle emerging health threats.
