Boehringer Ingelheim awards vet student scholars

Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health, as part of a summer research experience, awarded students for work in advancing veterinary care. More than 600 students from across the world take part in the Veterinary Scholars Program, and participants conducted research in various health areas.

The 2022 program was led by mentors from the National Institutes of Health and US Department of Agriculture. Research during the program included chronic disease, infectious disease, oncology, and toxicology. The summer is concluded with presentations on research at the National Veterinary Scholars Symposium. Students present their research findings to industry and public health personnel.

The event was sponsored by the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges, American Veterinary Medical Association, American Veterinary Medical Foundation, Boehringer Ingelheim, Burroughs Wellcome Fund, National Institutes of Health, and USDA.

"It's clear from the students' presentations that they have learned a great deal from their mentors and their research work this summer,” said Caroline Belmont, head of US animal health innovation for Boehringer Ingelheim at the event. “We hope that this summer's experience has introduced them to the many ways that veterinarians are contributing to science, innovation and the well-being of animals and humans, and that it will inspire them throughout their careers.”

New in 2022, twelve students were able to work alongside scientists at a USDA and Agricultural Research Service site where they studied diseases that could impact livestock. These students were supported with a monthly stipend and their costs were covered for travel and similar expenses.

As part of the closing of the summer’s program, students who presented posters could be awarded for their studies and its possible impact on animal health. The winners included Dr. Ashley M. Rasys, who won the 2022 Boehringer Ingelheim Veterinary Research Award for Graduate Veterinarians; and Sydney Womack, who was awarded the 2022 Boehringer Ingelheim Veterinary Research Award for Veterinary Students.
