A new scholarship program that brings together Sovereign Nations Veterinary, the Banfield Foundation, and the IDEXX Foundation. The scholarship is named for SVN’s late founder, Dr. Eric Jayne, and was initially launched as part of an initiative Jayne created. IDEXX and Banfield will fund the scholarship.
The program will aid members of Native American tribes who are interested in veterinary medicine and is intended to also increase access to veterinary care for animals on Native Nations. Scholarship recipients can pursue one of three NAVTA-approved tracts, including veterinary assistant, veterinary technician, and high school diploma with veterinary assistant.
"One of the biggest gaps we see in our work to support nonprofit partners is the need for inclusive and accessible veterinary care. Not only does the scholarship program support access to care but it also supports access to education," said Kim Van Syoc, executive director at Banfield Foundation. "Our hope is that this will ultimately create a sustainable path for Tribal members at Rosebud and beyond to lead the veterinary care for Native American communities for generations to come." Banfield Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is the charitable arm of Mars Veterinary Health.
Banfield and IDEXX earlier pledged support to SVN’s hospital for the Rosebud Lakota Sioux Tribe in South Dakota. Half of the funding for scholarships with be awarded related to the hospital and tribe. All scholarship recipients are expected to provide one year of work with Native Nations.
