FECAVA shows its commitment to the mental health of veterinarians
The federation has signed Mind Matters Internationals joint statement committing to making a real difference in veterinary mental health.
The European Federation of Companion Animal Veterinary Associations (FECAVA) recently announced the signing of the Mind Matters International Joint Statement, which was initiated by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Through this initiative, FECAVA member associations show their commitment to working together to make a real difference in veterinary mental health. FECAVA was already supporting the mental health and well-being of the veterinary community across Europe with an active working group that was formed in 2018. The aim of the group is to raise awareness and collect evidence on how mental health problems are affecting the profession in Europe by recognizing different problems, sharing ideas, providing a place to point out sources of information, and developing a set of tools that can be adapted to different centers and countries.
Unification for a better mental health
By participating in the MM International group, FECAVA shows its unification with the global veterinary family by recognizing the importance of maintaining high levels of mental health and well-being for everyone within the profession and hopes to share resources and, rather than duplicate work, collaborate. In areas where there is more work to be done.
Adrian Hochstadt, AVMA Deputy General Director, Joint Developers of Mind Matters International Statement, notes: “AVMA and RCVS are delighted that FECAVA has joined our Mind Matters International Statement. We are proud to be part of a global veterinary community that is recognizing the importance of mental health and wellness, and we look forward to working with them to support veterinarians by sharing best practices and resources, and being a strong and united voice on the importance of a safe and supportive culture ".
Patricia Colville, chair of FECAVA's mental health and wellness working group, adds: "I am very pleased to have the opportunity to collaborate with AVMA and RCVS on this important project."
The Mind Matters Initiative (MMI) aims to improve the mental health and well-being of members of veterinary centers, including students, assistants, veterinarians, and center managers. MMI was launched in 2015 and is funded and run by the RCVS, a body that takes the mental health and well-being of members of the veterinary profession very seriously. Mind Matters is a multidisciplinary initiative, supported by a working group made up of representatives from leading veterinary organizations and veterinary assistants.
