In its initial foray into the pet nutrition marketplace, newcomer Virbac has launched its Veterinary HPM Spay and Neuter Diets. The food line for cats and dogs is aimed at pets that have been spayed or neutered.
According to the company, spaying and neutering can alter metabolism for companion animals post-surgery and makes pets more likely to become obese. The surgeries can decrease metabolic rate by as much as 30% while appetite may also increase by 60%, said Virbac. About 90% of companion cats and dogs are neutered or spayed yet the existing nutritional products do not account for changes after the surgical procedures, according to the company.
"We've seen remarkable success with this product in European markets and believe in its ability to provide pet owners with the best resource for their pet's health," said François Fournier, chief executive officer and [resident of Virbac North America. "We're thrilled to bring Veterinary HPM Pet Nutrition to the market in the United States, as it provides pet owners with a diet designed to meet the specific needs of their spayed or neutered dogs and cats."
Various versions of the food are available, including for young cats and dogs, small or toy and medium and large, and junior or adult formulations. Food can be purchased through the company’s eCommerce platform or through veterinarians.
