Antimicrobial drug use in poultry can be divided into three categories of use: therapeutic, preventative/ prophylactic and growth promoting.
Under current husbandry conditions in the poultry industry, segregation and medication of individual sick birds is not feasible. Apramycin is an aminocyclitol approved for use in poultry in some European countries and can be used in an extra-label fashion where permitted. Three tetracyclines most commonly used in poultry are chlortetracycline, oxytetracycline, and tetracycline.
While now banned for use in poultry in the United States, fluoroquinolones are available for therapeutic use in some countries and permitted for extra-label use in others. The fluoroquinolones are some of the most effective antimicrobial compounds developed for use in poultry. Above all, residue avoidance is critical to ensure that people are not accidentally exposed to antimicrobial residues in poultry products.
