The Mystic, Connecticut-based Mystic Aquarium will hold an August 19, 2021 benefit to support Beluga whale research and conservation. The aquarium cares for three of the endangered whales, and study of the trio provides information on the species, which is declining in the wild.
"Studying the Belugas by our outstanding research team is an important undertaking to preserve these animal populations in the wild," said Steve Coan, president and CEO of the Mystic Aquarium. "The Belugas at our habitat are helping their wild counterparts that continue to dwindle as a result of rapid changes to the environment. However, the research and maintaining their habitat is also expensive, and we thank those who are stepping up to financially support this important endeavor.”
Caring for the three Belugas costs millions annually, including $250,000 for food and veterinary care. Maintenance of the 750,000 gallon space also is costly. The event is hoped to raise upward of $3 million in funding for Mystic’s research. Attendees will be able to participate in bidding to name the whales as well as an auction for boats, a car, an internship, and sports events. Online bidding will be available.
