A European project uses by-products from the food industry to manufacture alternative feed

The AZTI - Marine and Food Science and Technology Center coordinates the international project Newsfeed, which aims to take advantage of the by-products of the food industry as animal feed through circular economy plans.

The project, which in Spain also has the participation of Neiker, the Spanish Confederation of Compound Animal Feed Manufacturers (CESFAC), the Álava Agro-livestock Union (UAGA), Bodegas Baigorri, and Riera Nadeu, is part of the PRIMA program, with the support and financing of Horizon 2020 from the European Union, and will be carried out in parallel in four countries: Egypt, Greece, Spain, and Turkey, with a total of 14 partners. It was launched on July 1, 2021 and its duration is 48 months.

Development of alternative feed

The objective of this initiative is the development and adoption of alternative feeds that, with a circular economy approach, convert the by-products of the food industry into high-value feed for animal feed. Similarly, the project will also focus on increasing the sustainability of Mediterranean livestock through the recovery of by-products of the local food industry, which will reduce environmental impact and costs.

With this objective, the project partners will focus on testing and demonstrating the technical and economic feasibility of alternative food resources from improved by-products of the food industry in the Mediterranean area.

Feed ingredients for ruminants and poultry

Through the project, three different value chains will be validated to create new business opportunities:

  • Valorization of the grape stalk from wineries as second generation food to produce a new feed ingredient for ruminants (sheep and dairy cows). The study will be carried out in Spain.
  • Valorization of orange peel from orange juice industries to produce an improved feed ingredient for ruminants (dairy sheep). The study will take place in Greece.
  • Valorization of olive cake from the olive oil industry to produce a feed ingredient for poultry (broilers). The study will take place in Egypt.

The proposed solutions are in line with national and regional strategies and policies, as they are based on circular economy schemes, and will be carried out in collaboration with the main stakeholders considering a multi-stakeholder approach.

Newfeed aims to contribute to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and will help develop sustainable and efficient agriculture, livestock and food system. Through this project, the partners involved will have the opportunity to increase public and consumer awareness of sustainability, circular economy, resource efficiency, climate neutrality, food system interconnection, local innovation, economic growth, employment in rural areas, or renewable biological resources.
