The Veterinary Information Network (VIN), a member-based online service for veterinary students and professionals, is seeking nominations for the Veritas Award. The network established the award in 2021 to recognize those in the profession who put scientific facts at the forefront of care and advocacy.
The awards are meant to “honor individuals who weathered significant external adversity while championing science that improves the lives of veterinarians, animals and animal owners,” according to a news release. Nominations are open and due by Nov. 15 through VIN for veterinarians who prioritized data-based facts that support public health and the veterinary profession.
In 2021, VIN recognized two veterinarians — Drs. J. Scott Weese and Steve Valeika — who educated people about the epidemiology of COVID-19 with humor and courage despite professional and personal backlash.
Weese is a professor at the Ontario Veterinary College and director of the Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses at the University of Guelph. Valeika is a small animal veterinarian in Asheville, North Carolina. He has a doctoral degree in epidemiology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and was previously an epidemiology professor at the University of Georgia.
