Pet food firm, Champion Petfoods, has committed to providing a 5-year grant to veterinary medicine leader, University of Guelph. As part of the funding, the university will be able to appoint an endowed university chair to oversee training, research, and development. The research grant is hoped to bolster innovation in research into nutrition in pet foods and to seed training of the up-and-coming personnel in that area.
"This is a commitment to the future of our industry," said Jeff Johnston, senior vice president of research, innovation, and product development at Champion Petfoods. "At Champion we focus exclusively on making the best, most nutritional food to support a pet's long-term health—the best there is today and the best that's possible tomorrow. The science that will carry us into that future holds the promise to benefit not only Champion and the University of Guelph, but our entire industry and people everywhere who value the health of pets." The school’s veterinary science program is highly ranked (fifth worldwide).
Grant funding will be used to expand research into the underlying science of pet nutrition, specifically working to prepare veterinary students to work within the field. Monies from the grant will also support the newly named chairperson: Dr. Anna Kate Shoveller, who will serve as the first Champion Petfoods chair in canine and feline nutrition. The chair will be under the school’s department of Animal Biosciences. Shoveller brings experience in the pet food business, doctorate in metabolism and nutrition, and her past role as chair of the American Society of Animal Sciences' Companion Animal Committee.
"Our purpose at Champion is to earn pet lovers' trust every day so pets thrive for a lifetime," said Champion Petfoods, chief executive officer at Champion Petfoods. "Dedicated original research into pet nutrition is a foundational element that makes that possible. Our collaboration with the University of Guelph and Dr. Shoveller will help ensure that one of the world's leading research teams has the resources to advance this vital work for the betterment of pets everywhere."
