Humane Society to remove 4K beagles from breeder for labs

The Humane Society of the United States has embarked on an effort to remove about 4,000 beagle dogs from Envigo RMS LLC, a breeding facility that supplies animal testing laboratories. The transfer is part of an agreement that was greenlighted by the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia.

"These dogs have lived their lives in a massive breeding facility riddled with Animal Welfare Act violations," said Miguel Abi-hassan, chief animal rescue, care and sanctuary officer for the Humane Society of the United States. "We are so grateful for the opportunity to work with our shelter and rescue partners to give these beagles a new life."

A plan for transfer of the dogs was earlier submitted by the Department of Justice and Envigo after the department filed a lawsuit against Envigo. That suit, filed in May, alleged that the breeding facility had violated Animal Welfare Act after conducting federal inspections.

The transfer of the beagle dogs will be managed by the humane society in steps and across the next 60 days. After the dogs are removed, dogs will be placed up for adoption through the Humane Society and its partners.

Over multiple inspections, violations mounted against the facility, including improper euthanasia, inadequate food and veterinary care, and unsanitary circumstances. Envigo is a subsidiary of Inotiv Inc., the latter of which shared plans to close the facility in June 2022.
