Warrior Companion, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in New York and Texas, has begun to pay pet insurance for service animals assigned to veterans who are disabled. The insurance payments will help defray some of the costs of owning the service animals.
More than a quarter of veterans (26%) from combat have a disability from their service, whether physical or anxiety, depression, or PTSD. A service animal can be beneficial with veterans’ symptoms, but the cost can be too high for some, and government agencies do not cover all costs.
Warrior Companion operates under Companion Animal Foundation, which covers the cost of pet insurance for service animals. Service companions can be of any size or breed.
