AVMA News reported on Nov. 21 that Dr. Jim Pillen, the Republican candidate for Nebraska governor, won the governor’s race by an overwhelming majority in November. Pillen garnered nearly 60% of the vote against Democrat and Libertarian opponents.
A Nebraska native, the governor-elect grew up on a farm and raised pigs with his family. Pillen played football at the University of Nebraska in the late 1970s and earned his bachelor’s degree in animal science.
After graduating in 1983 from Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine, he opened a small animal practice and a swine consulting practice in Nebraska. Pillen also owned a commercial swine operation with his father and later expanded the business with the addition of DNA Genetics, a swine genetics company that currently employs more than a thousand people. He will be the only veterinarian currently serving as a governor in the U.S.
