AMA, ASHP, and APA have all called for a moratorium on human prescriptions of ivermectin, a deworming agent in horses. Three medical organizations, the American Medical Association, American Pharmacists Association, and American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, released a statement on September 1, calling for dispending of the medication to people to stop.
According to a joint statement, the trio of organizations “strongly oppose the ordering, prescribing, or dispensing of ivermectin to prevent or treat COVID-19 outside of a clinical trial.” The interest in the medication comes after it was touted as a preventative and treatment for COVID-19 on talk radio.
The statement went on to explain the FDA approval for ivermectin is specific to external and internal parasites. Still, information suggests that prescriptions and dispensing of ivermectin has increased by 14 folds during the pandemic, and poison control cases related to taking the drug have increased by 5 times.
The CDC Health Alert Network Advisory has also stepped in to suggest that patient counseling is necessary, including that healthcare professionals highlight the possibility of overdose and toxicity, including seizures, hallucination, and death in the former.
