The European Federation of Equine Veterinarians launches an awareness campaign on herpesvirus-1

Under the slogan "Equine Herpesvirus 1 – An enemy of the Equidae family", the Federation of European Equine Veterinary Associations (FEEVA) has started a campaign to help equine veterinarians across Europe to recognize the essential aspects of EHV infection. -1 in horses, increase knowledge about the disease and widely disseminate information.

"Sharing an ancient co-evolution with wild and domestic horses makes EHV-1 the most successful pathogen and one of the greatest enemies of the Equidae family", they point out from FEEVA.

Some of the strategies this virus uses, such as presentation as mild or inapparent disease and the ability to persist as a latent infection, allow it to survive undetected in horse populations and move freely between susceptible groups.

"Our familiarity with EHV-1 may lead us to end up tolerating the devastating consequences of neurological disease outbreaks and abortions," they add.

The virus is most dangerous in high-risk circumstances, such as late gestation and horse gatherings during competitions. "Only through a deep knowledge and understanding of the enemy's strengths and weaknesses can strategies be devised to disarm and defeat him," they conclude.

FEEVA hopes that the information can contribute to veterinarians' understanding of the disease and the equine world in general.
