Developed a free application to assess the body condition and weight of horses

The free weight-monitoring app has been developed by the University of Glasgow and one of its Ph.D. students to help owners monitor the weight and body condition of horses.

The new version of Equi-BCS, updated in response to a survey of more than 100 people, including veterinary professionals, nutritionists, and horse owners, was developed by Katie Williams, an equine nutritionist who conducted the survey and the development of the application as part of his doctoral project in veterinary research.

The app allows owners to record and share weight data, making it easier for professionals to help them monitor their horse's weight. It also helps detect possible health problems, such as obesity, early.

Technology Increases the Success of Weight Tracking Programs

Williams notes: "One of the most difficult challenges for any horse owner is maintaining optimal weight, and previous studies have shown that horse owners tend to underestimate their horse's body condition score. To be successful, a collaborative approach is required that includes veterinarians, nutritionists, and farriers working alongside horse owners."

The app contains images and detailed instructions to help horse owners accurately assess their horses, and they can upload their own photos to remember how their horse was before.

According to research on weight tracking applications in people, the use of technology often leads to greater success. In addition, the app also sends notifications to remind owners to re-evaluate their horses.

Monitoring is key

Adds Williams: "It's amazing how quickly a horse can change and so regular monitoring, ideally every two weeks, is key. Receiving a reminder will provide the notice many people need to make sure they take the time to assess their horse and make ration adjustments or seek the advice of their veterinarian or nutritionist."

The Equi-BCS app is available for free on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
