7 Exciting and Innovative Pet Care Products

Dog and cat populations have grown over the last several years, as well as the number of households owning these pets—85% of dog owners and 76% of cat owners now view their pet as a family member. Pet owners spend a yearly average of $1,380 caring for their dogs and $908 for their cats, and are constantly looking for new and innovative ways to care for their pet. Keep reading to learn about exciting and innovative pet care products on the market.

#1: FluentPet

FluentPet uses hexagonal shaped tiles and recordable sound buttons to help you teach your dog or cat to communicate. The system combines techniques from speech language pathology and cognitive science to configure arrangements that are meant to help you and your pet communicate and remember word locations. The tiles help hold the sound buttons in place, and help you organize the buttons by category (e.g., action words, places, people, animals, social words, and descriptors). A sheet of ideogram stickers is included with each kit, so you can label your buttons to help you distinguish among them. A starter guide is also included, explaining in detail each step you should take to successfully communicate with your pet. FluentPet developer, Leo Trottier, is sharing what his team learns using FluentPet with the Comparative Cognitive Laboratory at University of California San Diego, to better understand how pets use sound buttons to express themselves.

#2: Otto smart tag

The pet technology company Otto offers a smart pet tag to increase a pet’s chances of being returned if they go missing. The owner can specify multiple points of contact, their pet’s medical needs, and their vaccination records. The tag is equipped with a quick response (QR) code, and the pet owner can view exactly when and where their pet’s tag was scanned if they go missing. In addition, when someone scans a pet’s tag, they can view the owner’s contact information, as well as the pet’s information, so they can provide the care the pet needs until they can be reunited with their family. An Otto tag is great for pets to have in addition to a microchip, since pets pet won’t need to go to a shelter or veterinary office to have their tag scanned.

#3: Meowtel

Cats aren’t great travelers, and cat owners value peace of mind when they must leave their cat behind. Meowtel is the most popular cat-sitting app in the United States, connecting cat owners with trusted and fully insured in-home cat sitters. Cat owners can easily search for cat sitters and reserve their services. A meet-and-greet is then arranged before the scheduled travel date, to ensure the sitter is the right match. Each visit includes feeding, water refreshing, litter box cleaning, pets, and playtime. In addition, Meowtel sitters are able to administer medication, if needed. The cat sitter sends regular updates while you are away, including photos and videos.

#4: Otter eQ instrument

Pseudomonas infections can be difficult to treat, and require frequent monitoring to ensure the infection is being managed appropriately. QSM Diagnostics has developed sensor technology that selectively and specifically detects quorum sensing molecules (QSM) secreted by bacterial cells in ear, urine, wound, and sputum samples. This advanced tool helps veterinarians diagnose and monitor bacterial infections in dogs and cats. Testing is easy—only a swab of the infected area is required, and results are available in two minutes. The portable Otter device can be linked to any computer to reveal results in the Google Chrome browser. These results are automatically stored in the cloud for easy access.

#5: uPetsia

A University of Arizona research team started uPetsia to cure your dog’s bad breath. They screened hundreds of bacteria found in dogs’ mouths, and identified 20 harmless bacteria they could safely modify. They developed a safe new bacterial strain that produces a minty aroma that improves doggy breath for several hours. This technology can be incorporated into treats and chews, and provides long-lasting fresh breath. Other dental chews only mask the foul odor, and last for only a few minutes. The company stresses that this technology is not meant to substitute regular professional dental cleanings, but only to keep your dog’s breath fresh between cleanings.

#6: PrettyLitter

Cats are excellent at hiding health issues, and PrettyLitter changes color to help notify you when your cat has a potential illness.

  • Dark yellow — Dark yellow to olive green indicates normal cat urine.
  • Orange — Orange indicates acidic urine, and may indicate conditions such as metabolic acidosis or kidney tubular acidosis.
  • Blue — Blue indicates alkaline urine, and may indicate certain types of urinary tract infections, or increased  stone formation risk.
  • Red — Red indicates blood, and may indicate conditions such as bladder crystals, feline lower urinary tract disorder, and certain kidney disease types.

In addition to detecting potential health problems, PrettyLitter is made from silica minerals that help control odor and reduce dust, causing less mess.

#7: Paway

Paway is a social network for dogs that allows dog owners to create a profile for their four-legged friend, schedule neighborhood play dates, stay informed about local news and alerts, locate dog friendly sites, and help find lost dogs. They can also upload photos, and share their favorite walking routes with friends, family, and followers.

Pet owners adore their four-legged friends, and these innovative pet care products will help them pamper their precious pets, and ensure they remain safe, happy, and healthy.
