WSU fund covers surgery for Spokane family’s horse after Old Trails Fire

While Dudley was being treated at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Washington State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, in Pullman, the Roziers’ barn, chicken house, and pasture were destroyed in the Old Trails Fire, but the cost of lifesaving surgery for Dudley was covered by Washington State University’s Good Samaritan Fund.

— A Spokane family is rebuilding after the Old Trails Fire destroyed their property and a fund created by Washington State University veterinary students back in 1996 played a role in their recovery.
Their story, featured on WSU Insider , touts the Good Samaritan Fund in helping cover emergency surgery costs for the family's miniature horse, Dudley, who was already hospitalized when the fire broke out.
Micki and Bill Rozier’s miniature horse, Dudley, arrived at WSU’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital two days before the fire with severe abdominal pain.
Veterinarians performed emergency surgery to remove an intestinal blockage while the family later dealt with fire damage at home.
Rozier described the fast-moving fire and evacuation in stark terms.
“I turned around and you could see it coming.
It was dark; it was smoky and your eyes are stinging.
The report adds to ongoing university-led research relevant to veterinary medicine, animal health, and clinical decision-making.
